Small Wonder

Is it a small driver or a large fairway wood? Yes. TaylorMade’s new 300 Series Mini Driver might be just what you need.

Twenty and a half years ago, a bunch of golf equipment writers gathered on the range at a course somewhere in Orlando (I forget which) during the PGA Merchandise Show, and hit TaylorMade’s new 300 Series drivers. There was a 300Ti model, a 320Ti and 360Ti. The writers were a bit confused at first because here were three similar, but different, drivers being launched at the same time. No one had done that before. After a couple of hours on the range, hitting the clubs and listening to the blurb, however, the writers seem convinced. Whether because of their size or weight, the different drivers suited different players.

These days, offering two, usually three, versions of the same driver is perfectly normal. TaylorMade’s last driver release – the SIM2 – came in Standard, SIM2 Max (24g back weight instead of 16g in the standard club), and SIM2 Max D (same as the Max but built with a draw bias). The head of the 2021 300 Series Mini Driver is 307cc in size and clearly pays homage to the 300 Series drivers from 2001. But while the original 300 Series was regarded as hi-tech for its time, it was somewhat light on tech compared with the new club. The original was constructed entirely from titanium whereas the new features a multi-material build.

The combination of light carbon composite crown and titanium body/face and steel sole lowers the Center of Gravity (CG) significantly making it easier to get the ball in the air. Twist Face, first seen on the M3 and M4 drivers in 2018 and designed to make your low-heel and high-toe strikes perform better than they might deserve, is present on the new driver, and a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket allows the sole to flex creating additional ball speed and helping low-face mis-hits into the air. The adjustable loft sleeve enables you to personalize your club by adjusting the loft +/- 2˚, and the 54g V Steel Sole Plate not only lowers the CG but improves turf interaction too. Either way, it could fill a very important gap in your arsenal.
