It wasn’t exactly pre and post-PGA Show-busy, but in the weeks leading up to the year’s first major when we saw the seasonal release of some cool, limited-edition, Masters-specific gear, the golf equipment industry had been ticking over with releases ranging from Shot Scope’s X5 watch to Sun Mountain’s new Mid-Stripe bags to PXG’s 0311 Gen 6 irons to Ping’s new PLD Milled and PLD Limited putters to True Linkswear’s latest All-Knit shoe to Radmor’s Spring collection to the new T-Grind SM9 wedge from Vokey.

In amongst all that was another wedge story worth mentioning – Callaway’s release of its new Jaws Raw Full Toe (other brands prefer Hi-Toe, of course) which was made available in stores last Friday.

The company first released a Jaws wedge in 2009. Called the X-Series Jaws wedge, it featured MACK Daddy grooves and created a barely legal amount of spin. The name went silent for a decade, however, but re-emerged in 2019 with the Jaws MD5 wedge – another spin sensation.

In August of 2021, the Jaws Full Toe was unveiled. The new wedge was inspired by 2019’s PM Grind wedges but, instead of the toe being noticeably raised, it wasn’t so conspicuous and part of a more traditionally-shaped wedge.

Then, a couple of weeks after last year’s US Open at the Country Club, came the Jaws Raw wedges whose faces were free of any coating or finish to ensure maximum friction and featured super-sharp grooves with a 37-degree wall angle, a straighter leading edge, and tungsten weighting together with progressive hosel lengths which manipulated the Center of Gravity’s (CG) position to produce flatter trajectory.

Three weeks ago, Callaway announced a combination of the Raw finish with the Full Toe shape. Full Toe, or Hi-Toe, wedges have a larger hitting area especially when you add loft by opening the face. And the higher the toe, the higher the CG which means an even more piercing, controllable trajectory, the goal being a relatively low-flying wedge with maximum spin.

Sharp grooves cover the entire face (this ‘Line Extension’ from Callaway also includes the original Jaws Raw wedges with Full-Face grooves in the Z, S and W-Grinds of the 58˚ and 60˚  lob wedges) and the Full Toe will come with the new J Grind which has moderate camber (curvature) from heel to toe, and a slightly higher heel. The sole gets wider nearer the toe and there are 10˚ of bounce, making it ideal from greenside bunkers.

Also new is the C Grind which will be available in the standard Jaws Raw 54˚, 56˚, 58˚ and 60˚  models with 8˚  of bounce – a ‘player’s’ grind well-suited to firmer ground and tighter lies.

Callaway also announced the Jaws Raw X Grind (the Jaws family’s highest-bounce and widest sole), which was previously available only in 58˚ and 60˚ clubs will now also be available in 54˚ and 56˚. And the Z Grind (8˚ of bounce), until now available only in 58˚ and 60˚ lofts, will also now be available in a 62˚ club.

Left-handers were also part of the ‘Line Extension’ news as the Black Plasma Jaws Raw wedges will now be available in left-hand in 60˚ Z, X and W-Grinds, along with the S-Grind in 52˚, 56˚, and 60˚ clubs.
