MacGregor Golf releases its Tour Grind Forged Wedge
By Tony Dear
The Direct-to-Consumer business model continues apace, and though it isn’t quite the disruptor the golf industry believed it might be a few years ago, its most recognizable brands are still producing quality equipment and reporting strong sales numbers. No doubt buoyed by the number of new golfers Covid created who are still playing and would appear to have transitioned from ‘new golfer’ to ‘golfer’, the DTC industry can be said to have matured, and there’s no reason to suggest it won’t be a significant part of the game for the foreseeable future.
MacGregor Golf, one of eight well-known brands owned by Henderson, NV-based DTC company, Golf Brands, might never return to its halcyon days when its products were used to win 59 Major championships, but under its new ownership (well, Golf Brands acquired it in 2020), it is re-established and there’s no question it is bringing out some awfully good gear that you can often purchase for less than half of what you’ll pay for major OEM-made clubs.

Last summer, MacGregor released the very good Tourney Max driver, a multi-material model that didn’t quite match the big boys’ drivers for distance, forgiveness, or adjustability but, at just $250, blew them out of the water for value. It’s currently offering four foam-filled or forged (and milled) iron models for $530-$710 on its website. There are eight putters, ranging from $100 to $200, that will probably perform just as well as far more expensive putters in the hands of a typical amateur golfer.
And, two years after it gave us the impressive Tour Grind Milled Wedge, MacGregor has now announced the release of the Tour Grind Forged Wedge which, like its siblings in other parts of the bag, can be purchased online for considerably less than what the Big Four (Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist, and Ping) charge for their wedges.

Of course, you won’t get the same level of innovation, engineering, or spec range (there’s just the one grind option, and the lowest amount of bounce available is 10.6˚ on the 60˚ and 62˚ clubs) as you do with pricier wedges, but the MacGregor club is forged from 1025 Carbon-Steel, so will feel great off the face. And, provided you don’t play on a course with incredibly tight lies, we dare say you’ll find a way to make these higher-bounce clubs work for you.
