CU Women’s Golf on a Roll

BOULDER—As the University of Colorado women’s golf team continues to set records and program firsts throughout the season, another one seems to be looming just over the horizon, a top 10 ranking.

There are three major ranking services for college women’s golf, Golfstat, Golfweek and the Golf World/NGCA poll.  The first two are computerized rankings and the other is the coaches poll.  Coming off the first set of consecutive tournament wins in school history, the Buffs are currently ranked No. 11 or No. 12 in all three, the highest ranking in program history for any of the polls.

In the Golf World/NCGA poll, CU moved up from No. 14 to No. 11 in the March 28 poll.  That March 28 date is after the Buffs win in Hawai’i at the Anuenue Spring Break Challenge but voting was complete before the Buffs most resent result.

In the Golfstat poll also dated March 28, the Buffs moved up from No. 14 to No. 12 after its third win of the season.  CU’s three tournament wins this year are the most in school history (and one-third of the overall total of nine tournament wins), tied for the second most in the country with No. 8 LSU and No. 21 N.C. State and behind only No. 1 UCLA and its four tournament wins.  The Buffs are one of only 10 teams in the top 25 that have won multiple tournaments, and just those four mentioned have won three or more.

In the Golfweek poll, Colorado is No. 11 as of March 25, which, like the coaches poll, is calculated without the Buffs most recent victory.  The new Golfweek poll should be out this weekend or early next week.

Individually in the Golfstat poll, Alex Stewart is ranked No. 42, Emily Talley No. 49, Jess Wallace No. 84 and Jenny Coleman No. 178 (the top 250 are ranked).  It’s the first time CU has had two players in the top 50 and three in the top 100 in program history in the spring.  In the Golfweek individual rankings, Stewart is No. 39, Talley No. 49, Wallace No. 75 and Coleman No. 136.  Kristin Coleman is also No. 237 in that poll that ranks well over 1,200 players weekly. 

The Buffs will next be in action on April 15 at Colorado National Golf Course in a dual match against Colorado State before heading to the postseason, first in Pullman, Wash., at the Pac-12 Championships.  After that, the Buffs host the NCAA West Regional at Colorado National May 10-12 (to volunteer for the championships, please visit www.cubuffs.com/golfvolunteers.

If the Buffs are selected for the NCAA Championships (72 teams are taken), they will be placed in the West Regional and it would be just the third time CU has been selected.  The top eight teams from each regional then advance to the NCAA Championships, set for May 23-26 in Franklin, Tenn.  Colorado would be looking to advance for the first time in school history.
