CU Men finish well at Bandon Dunes

Buffs have best tournament of the year, finish sixth at 3rd Annual Bandon Dunes Championship

The courses out at Bandon Dunes have a reputation of being quite a challenge, but this past weekend the University of Colorado men’s golf team had no problem with them. The team had its best showing of the season so far, finishing sixth at a total score of 882, and only a couple shots out of a top five finish. Needless to say, Coach Ray Edwards was impressed.

“I thought we had a pretty good week and the team, as a whole, played solid,” said Edwards. The scores of the players back up Edwards’ diagnosis of the tournament with a couple of solid rounds by senior Kevin Kring and junior Beau Schoolcraft.

Kring, who leads the team with a solid scoring of average of 72.9 this spring season, fired off a one-under par score of 70 on Bandon Trails Black Course that included four birdies. Kring’s 70 was one of only five under-par rounds on the final day and one of 11 the whole tournament. Kring ended up with a total score of five-over score of 218 and placed 10th individually in the tournament.

Schoolcraft also played well on his final day, shooting a one-over score of 72 on the same course. He had the highest number of pars (38) of anyone in the tournament and played well down the stretch to finish at a tie for 15th with fellow junior Derek Fribbs.

Fribbs shot a team tournament low with a 68 on the second day of play, but struggled to maintain his momentum when he finished with a 77 on the last day. Fribbs did have 10 birdies overall though and still placed top 20, so all-in-all a good tournament for him.

Rounding out the team, junior Jason Burstyn played good the first two days, but just like Fribbs, struggled on the last day with a 77. Burystn ended up at 41st individually and freshman David Oraee, who carded a total score of 226, ended up in a tie for 44th. Still, the team played very well, especially against some perennial powerhouses like Washington and Oregon.

“We beat some good teams, and are excited about our progress,” stated Edwards. “We weren't able to be outside at all prior to our last tournament, but were able to get a lot of good practice in for Bandon Dunes and it showed up on the course,” he furthered.

The next time we will see the Buffs in action will be March 26th and 27th at the Oregon Duck Invitation in Eugene. Looks like the Buffs have gotten back on track and are ready to make a charge!
