The new Cobra DS-Adapt driver family gives you many options to find a club and setting that suits you
By Tony Dear
Nowadays, manufacturers introduce new clubs accompanied by press releases that take some sifting through.
There are usually multiple models available, each targeted at a specific type of player; there are new or adapted technologies that represent a genuine shift or progress in the market; and there are components and external weights that allow for significant adjustability. With its new DS Adapt drivers, it looks like Cobra has taken these complexities to a new level.
After a visit to the company’s website, a part of you might think what it’s offering is overkill. The phrase “Just because you could, doesn’t mean you should” comes to mind, if only for a moment.
Make no bones about it, though, what Cobra has developed here is really cool and, though it might strike you as excessive to begin with, you’ll probably start to think differently once you see it in action.
We’re talking specifically about the FutureFit 33 (or FF33) adapter which allows you to choose between 33 unique hosel positions (there are 64 but some are duplicates. The FF33 is pretty self-explanatory, but if it seems a little overwhelming there is a QR Code on the heel of the club that you can scan to see an explanatory video).
Look at the diagram showing all the different flight pattern options and you may come away thinking why anyone would need to alter their ballflight from D8 to C1 or B4 to A5, but that’s beside the point. What’s important is that you can do it if you choose and that, with the FF33, the Cobra DS-Adapt is undoubtedly the most adjustable, fittable driver available.
What else makes the DS-Adapt a driver you definitely should consider? There are four models – DS-Adapt LS (low-spin), DS-Adapt X (the standard model that Cobra says offers a “Perfect blend of speed and forgiveness”), DS-Adapt Max-K (which adds Cobra to the list of manufacturers offering 10,000 MOI drivers), and the DS-Adapt Max-D (heel weight gives it a draw bias).
All four have head shapes designed to optimize the clubs’ aerodynamics. The raised crown and smooth soles enable air to pass more quickly over the surface of the club which means it moves a little faster without any extra effort on your part.
The clubheads are formed by a titanium chassis with a carbon crown and carbon-fiber sole plates. The four models each have an internal weight to affect a different trajectory, shot shape, and level of forgiveness. The 9˚ DS-Adapt X has a PWR Bridge positioned low and forward to reduce spin and increase ballspeed while the 10.5˚ club has no PWR Bridge but rather a weight low and back in the sole to increase launch angle and make the club more stable.
The 9˚ LS likewise has a forward PWR Bridge while the 10.5˚ model has a backweight. The DS-Adapt Max-K not only has the backweight but additional weighting on the back perimeter of the club to push the MOI past 10.000 making it extremely forgiving and the choice of higher-handicappers, and the DS-Adapt Max-D has a weight in the heel to allow the club to turn over prior to impact squaring the face and promoting a draw.
All four have Cobra’s H.O.T (Highly Optimized Topology) Face which thickens or thins certain areas to maximize ballspeed no matter where contact is made. The face is different for each model though, as players who might use a 9˚ LS hit the ball in a different spot to players who would choose the 12˚ Max-K.
Each model has Cobra’s H.O.T (Highly Optimized Topology) Face, thickening or thinning certain areas of the face to maximize ballspeed no matter where contact is made. The face is different for each model though, as players who might use a 9˚ LS hit the ball in a different part of the face to players who would choose the 12˚ Max-K.
With the FF33, model-specific H.O.T. Faces, and loft-specific internal weighting – the LS also has three moveable external weights (10, 3, 3 grams) while the X has two (10, 3 grams) – the chances are very good there is a Cobra DS-Adapt that will make you an ounce straighter, longer, more consistent, or all three than you are currently.
