Cobra’s Baffler celebrates 50 years of making the game more enjoyable for mid-high handicappers
By Tony Dear
While thousands of high-quality golf equipment items have been produced over the last 50 years, only a select few have resonated deeply with golfers.

Names like Anser, Two-Ball, Apex, Big Bertha, Hoofer, Revolution, 588, Newport and a handful of others trigger happy memories among golfers who remember well the good rounds they signed for, and great shots they hit, with those items (maybe not in the case of the Hoofer, admittedly), and how confident they made them feel.
Baffler is another name that brings a smile to many golfers’ faces. The sole rails Australian clubmaker Tom Crow added to his Cobra clubs for the first time in 1975 have helped a huge number of players move the clubhead smoothly through the rough, sand, and other dicey lies for five decades, and the latest iteration of the beloved club may be the most innovative yet.
The new Baffler set features five distinct head types, which together make up a game-improvement combo that is going to make life easier for a lot of mid to high-handicappers. At the long end of the bag are 4 and 5 Hybrids whose low Center of Gravity (CG) will help get the ball off the ground and where the longer sole rails will facilitate getting the clubhead through whatever might impede its progress.
The 6 and 7 Hybrids are noticeably smaller/thinner/less-bulky but retain the high Moment of Inertia (MOI), making them pleasantly forgiving. The 8 and 9-irons have a hollow body and thin face to give your ball speed a little boost and though the sole rails are still present, they have become far less prominent as the golfer doesn’t require quite as much assistance as the club gets shorter.

The cavity-back Pitching Wedge (Gap and Sand Wedges are also available but sold separately) also keeps the weight low in the head and is perimeter-weighted to help any slight mishits stay on course. The low CG will help players get the ball up and create a steep angle of descent, enabling them to keep the ball on the green and, hopefully, close to the flag. And the shallow rails won’t get in the way of hitting consistent chip/pitch shots.
The new Baffler set is unashamedly for game-improvers and those with slower swing speeds who need some help from their clubs to make the game more fun. As Jose Miraflor, VP of Product Architecture and Consumer Connections for Cobra Golf, says, “We built this combo set to help golfers enjoy every swing.”
