Black Tie

Standard Satin Brush finish on your Mizuno Pro Series 225 iron, or the new Black ION plating? Either, they’re equally attractive.

At the end of 2021, we announced the coming of possibly the most attractive iron we’d even seen. There were plenty of other great-looking irons available, of course, but the Mizuno Pro Series 225, part of a three-strong family of irons which also featured the blade 221 and Players-Cavity 223, seemed to do the impossible. Not only did it look as refined and sophisticated as an old-fashioned blade, it also looked really playable – something blades tend not to do, of course. The 225 was thick, shiny and confidence-building in all the right places, and thin and cultured in the others. It was a club that would clearly look good in your bag and give you serious clout among your playing partners, while offering plenty of forgiveness – not enough to make it a game-improvement club certainly but more than enough for it to appeal to high single-digit handicappers as well as your club’s best players.

Not surprisingly, the Grain Flow Forged, hollow-body 225 spent 2022 winning ‘Best of’ lists and attracting praise from all who hit it.

Made with 4135 Chromoly (Hot Metal), and featuring 28.5 grams of interior Tungsten, the 2-7 irons promised a higher, more stable flight and increased ball speed. The 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon Steel in the 9-PW, meanwhile, produced great feel and a more penetrating flight thanks to the strategically-positioned 431 steel backweight. The whole set features a soft copper underlay for the exquisite impact sensation we’ve come to expect from a Mizuno iron.

The 225 has been by far the most popular model in the Pro Series family and blends particularly well with its hybrid cousin, the Mizuno Pro Fli-Hi, says 23-year Mizuno veteran Chris Voshall. The Fli-Hi Utility was born with a cool, ‘lights-out’ Black ION plating, preventing glare and slowing corrosion, and the Black ION plating met the Pro Series 225 recently for a new Special Edition set. The result is…well, look for yourselves.
“The plating does a great job of making the Fli-Hi appear more compact,” adds Voshall. “And it has the same effect on the 225s.”
