Distinctive Duo Joins Damascus Line

Odyssey has added two more models to its growing family of high-end Damascus steel putters

By: Tony Dear

Damascus steel was first produced in India and Sri Lanka around the year 500. It had a high carbon content and an attractive look that resulted from its elaborate construction and forging process. Traditionally, its primary use was in making swords that were certainly strong but which had a distinctive mottled or laddered pattern. Today’s Damascus Steel is made by forge-welding, folding, and pressing layers of different steels, then etching to reveal the distinctive, wavy pattern. It is more artisanal than industrial and is used to make knives/blades, jewelry, and gun parts.

Odyssey first used the modern version for its experimental, limited-edition White Damascus line in 2016, but followed up with a more authentic Damascus Steel insert putter in April this year when it released the Damascus Milled Seven CH (Crank Hosel). Though closer to the original Damascus Steel than the 2016 version, the 2026 insert was heat-treated and added a modern twist to the ancient material by incorporating AI-designed contours on its back surface. The combination, Odyssey says, creates an exquisite feel with consistent ball speeds from all points across the insert. So exotic a material doesn’t come cheap, of course. Indeed, these limited-edition putters will likely appeal only to the deep-pocketed golfer looking for something a bit special.

More shapes followed in June, and on Tuesday (7/7), two more Damascus Steel putters became available – the Jailbird Mini Double Bend and Seven S2S.
The Jailbird Mini is the more traditional of the two, featuring what has become one of Odyssey’s most popular mallet head shapes. The double-bend shaft makes it face-balanced with a three-quarter shaft offset- a configuration best suited to those whose putter-stroke has minimal face rotation.

The Seven S2S offers the familiar, fanged Seven shape in a zero-torque (Square to Square) putter. Those who rotate the face a little too much, perhaps, and need to quieten the amount of torque in their stroke might benefit from this model. Like most ZT putters, it is center-shafted, and it features three black alignment dots.

Both models have a premium blasted silver finish that gives the milled steel heads an elegant look, plus Odyssey’s lightweight SL90 shaft with a 20-gram counterbalance at the butt end, promoting better tempo and stability. A new Rubber Tour Pistol grip developed with Golf Pride is also common to both.
