Bruichladdich – the Classic Laddie – $50
Don’t worry, we’re not going to post a Father’s Day gift guide that doesn’t include a bottle of whisky. Most Father’s Day suggestions won’t look like this, though. The Classic Laddie’s turquoise/aqua bottle is said to evoke the color of Loch Indaal (a sea loch on which the distillery is located) when the sun meets the waves, and it puts one in mind of a fancy, modern cocktail rather than a whisky whose distiller’s roots date back to 1881. Bruichladdich has been through numerous owners and has shut down production several times in its 145-year history, but it was revived in 2001 by more progressive, experimental owners who established the unpeated Bruichladdich whiskies, and the traditionally peated Port Charlotte and super-heavily peated Octomore styles.
“Unpeated Islay Whisky” seems like an oxymoron – Bunnahabhain is the only other distillery on Islay (there are now 11) that creates whisky without peat smoke, and everything about it might seem unfamiliar to the Islay expert. The Classic Laddie, which replaced the Laddie 10, and its bottle have been around for a dozen years, though – plenty of time for the 100% Scottish barley spirit and green fruit/floral/honey/vanilla notes to have become a favorite, both with whisky newbies and veterans.
