Castle Pines Golf Club visitors will get course map styled as a ski trail map
By Jim Bebbington
Visitors to the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club this week will be given maps of the course and tournament amenities that may look a little familiar.
The map shows the course routing and tournament facilities just fine. But it does it in a style that will be familiar to anyone who still cherishes the paper trail maps at any of the Colorado ski resorts.
Tournament organizers released the map images this summer. They said they wanted the map to harken to Colorado’s ski culture, while still helping visitors get around Castle Pines Golf Club.
The map shows the grounds for the BMW Championship this week are set up to have two primary headquarters for visitors. The main clubhouse, with the first tee and the 18th green, are home to large grandstands and several of the most-elite club-level ticket amenities.
But it is the south side of the course – near the par 3 16th hole and the 15th green – where a lot of the action is going to be. Those holes are south of Happy Canyon Road and about as far from the clubhouse as visitors will get. There are a host of skybox and club-level pavilions for patrons there, as well as public food and drink and grandstands for the crowds.
The map also is clear that visitors who intend to move around had better wear comfortable walking shows. The course is well-known as a hilly experience – with the front nine’s first six holes playing down hill and then No. 7, 8 and 9 taking visitors back up. The back nine is similar, with steep climbs for holes No. 17 and 18.
The BMW Championship begins with a pro-am round Wednesday and tournament play runs Thursday through Sunday. The top 50 PGA Tour golfers according to FedEx points are here to compete, and the top 30 players will move on from Denver to play in Atlanta next week in the PGA Tour’s championship tournament, The Tour Championship.
