Data analyst Mark Broadie has helped revolutionize and modernize the analytics of golf with his strokes gained method of measuring the advantage of the better players.
Hear from him, as well as each team captain, in the video below from Standard Life Investments on the role analytics will play in this years Ryder Cup whether it be in selecting pairings, individual player preparation, or (in the case of the Americans) setting up the course to how they feel is most advantageous.
“When the margins are so thin, you have to have that bit of insight…the analysis and data and information to gain that knowledge of where you’re going a little bit wrong,” says Team Europe Captain Darren Clarke.
As Broadie adds, the information helps to answer “where are they gaining and losing strokes to try and figure out where is most important to put those precious practice hours to work.”
Both of this year’s Ryder Cup captains, Clarke of Europe and Davis Love III of the United States, are looking for any advantage possible when running the numbers and analyzing the data to help propel their respective teams to victory this year at Hazeltine Golf Club in Minnesota.
The 2016 Ryder Cup begins in September 27 and no matter what numbers are analyzed, the players still have to hit the shots and make the putts to take home the coveted trophy.
