How to Hit a 3-Wood Off the Deck

How to Hit Your 3-Wood off the Deck

Whether you need to clear a lake going for that Par-5 in two or just need to advance the ball down the fairway, hitting your 3-wood off the “deck” (ground) can be a struggle, both physically and mentally, for amateur golfers. How many times have you topped it, leaving a nice ball mark just inches in front of your ball? We see you nodding along.

Teaching pro Rick Shiels is here to help, with simple tips to help crush those fairway woods off the ground. They are called fairway woods after all, right?

Watch the video below and see Shiels explain the following tips:

  1. Why you should hit down on the ball and try to hit low shots, which actually result in the high shots you’re probably looking for.
  2. When the base of the club should hit the ground, and if you should take a divot.
  3. Why positioning the ball forward in your stance can help create the ideal launch angle.
