The CAG Bag

The PGA Tour this week stops in White Sulphur Springs, home of the Greenbrier Open, and the man most associated with this West Virginia tournament is Sam Snead. “Slammin’ Sammy” was known for his ball-striking, sidesaddle putting and, at an early age, playing golf with no shoes.

Sam believed you played the game with your feet; and to do that you have to walk. That’s how I prefer to play the game—put the bag on your back and off you go. Of course, today’s golf bags are tech wonders compared to the leather-and-canvas monstrosities of Snead’s days. Nonetheless, even in high summer heat, walking makes golf—at least for me—more enjoyable.

The sole of the game, if you will.

Carry bags have to be light enough so as not to sap strength from your legs and back but also offer enough conveniences in terms of storage pockets for balls and tees, wallet, cellphone, keys and foul-weather weather gear.

Sun Mountain’s Swift ZG does all that. Its top divides into two sections—irons in front, woods in the back. The stand is durable and the legs sit steadily even on the steepest of sidehill lies.

The ZG stands for Zero Gravity and refers to a weight belt golfers can attach to the double-straps, thereby adding more points to distribute the weight. I promptly took mine off and never looked back.
