Putt Like a Pro

A former PGA Tour putting champion reveals his secret to the perfect stroke.

In 1990 I led the PGA Tour in putting. I did it using two simple principles–good rhythm and maintaining proper angles through impact. If you’re an inconsistent putter, you’re most likely decelerating or breaking down before impact, meaning the handle of the putter is not staying ahead of the putter head two to three inches past impact. To correct this you want to get your tempo and rhythm correct so that you are hitting through your putts with your arms, hands, and wrists and not at the ball. You might have to shorten your backstroke to achieve this.
