Master the 50-Yard Pitch Shot

We're not telling you anything new in saying that the short game is probably where you can save the most strokes. We also know that new drivers and distance off the tee are generally sexier to talk about. Our gear reviews on drivers generally get more clicks than ones on wedges. Same goes for our instruction articles promoting distance off the tee versus most short game tips. When you hear a PGA or LPGA player talk after the round that he or she “scored well” it's generally because they capitalized on the opportunities around the green.

Pitching, chipping, and putting each can seem to be whole different animals in your golf game. That range from about 30-70 yards is a common sore spot for many golfers caught between a short chip and full swing wedge. Mastering your wedges from 50 yards and in not only will impress your friends, but can shave strokes off your handicap in a hurry. 

If you were asked to quickly name a PGA golfer famous for his short game wizardy, odds are you might name Phil Mickelson.

In the video below that was put out by Callaway Golf, Mickelson shows a couple simple and quick tips to master the 50-yard shot. Take his mindset on the 50-yard pitch out to the course next time and you might find your accuracy and distance control is greatly improved with two words he preaches: Aggressive Contact.
