Chef F. Tadd Chapman's Los Cabos travel tips on culture, food and restaurants
This month, our featured Los Cabos destination expert is restaurant owner and Executive Chef F. Tadd Chapman – voted one of Mexico’s top Celebrity Chefs, and Best Chef of Los Cabos. We’ve asked Tadd to share some “inside” information on the culinary side of Los Cabos and here’s what he told us:
Q: How long have you lived in Cabo and what brought you down to the destination originally?
A: Originally from Vancouver Island Canada, I first came to Los Cabos to visit my father in the winter of 1998. At that time I was a ripe 20 years old and a recent graduate of the culinary arts. One evening during that visit and after a few pitchers of margaritas we began discussing the idea of opening a restaurant in San Jose del Cabo. 15 years and many restaurants later I still reside in San Jose del Cabo operating the three restaurants.
Q: How has Cabo inspired your cooking style?
A: Over the years, my cooking style has changed tremendously and continues to grow and evolve. First thing that comes to mind is that I have often applied seafood dominant menus thanks to the wonderful and fresh supply of seafood in the area. As of late I have put more focus back to the local farms and ingredients and continue to develop dishes based around those items first.
Q: What should every traveler try (food-wise) when coming to Los Cabos?
A: I think there are many great restaurants in the Los Cabos area and many things that travellers should try. First and foremost I would recommend getting your fill of the fresh local fish and seafood, whether in the form of a fish taco, ceviche or 5 star dinner you must enjoy the seafood! That said, the best piece of advice I could give would be to get out of your hotel, explore and try different things, as there are a lot of fabulous eateries in Los Cabos.
