Defending Champ Out, Medalists Advance in CGA Match Play

DENVER — The qualifying co-medalists won their first-round matches Tuesday at the 113th Colorado Golf Association Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club, but defending champion and top-seeded Brian Dorfman of Cherry Creek Country Club withdrew Monday night due to a back injury.
Palmer Giro of Ptarmigan Country Club, the No. 64 seed, advanced by default with Dorfman's withdrawal.
Incoming University of Colorado golfer Ethan Freeman of Glenmoor Country Club, the second seed, defeated Josh McLaughlin of the Olde Course at Loveland 4 and 3. And former Colorado Mesa University golfer Brandon Bingaman of Black Canyon Golf Club, the co-medalist with Freeman, won 3 and 1 over Nick Zinanti of Elmwood Golf Course.
In all, six of the top eight seeds earned spots in the round of 32.
Two rounds of matches are scheduled for Wednesday. The championship will conclude with Friday's 36-hole final.
