Tucson: Lifestyle in the Old Pueblo

Take in the art, culture and food of southern Arizona

Art Pilgrimage

Located on 10 acres in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun is a National Historic District devoted to the thousands of paintings, mosaics, sculptures and structures created by Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia. His life was a joyous work of art, and this brilliant complex, which also features the open-air chapel he constructed, testifies to his genius. degrazia.org

El Charro, at 92 years, is the oldest continually operating Mexican restaurant in the U.S. owned by the same family. In addition to three Tucson locations, there’s one underwater. U. S. Navy named the galley on the U.S.S. Tucson submarine “El Charro Down Under.”

Wine Not? Plan a Day Trip to one of Southern Arizona’s vineyards! Experts claim the climate and soil conditions in Sonoita, Elgin and the Wilcox area are perfect for growing grapes. The wineries in these Southern Arizona villages agree. See if you do, too.

El Tour De Tucson, a 110-mile roadbike race held Saturday before Thanksgiving, attracts more than 9,000 people from all over to the city Bicycling magazine ranked third best in the country. The Tour is presented by Casino del Sol.

Ooh-La-La Encantada!

More than just luxury shops and restaurants, Tucson’s upscale, outdoor shopping center, La Encantada, features a slew of fitness events and festivals throughout the year. Sundays bring complimentary yoga at LuluLemon Athletica; Wednesdays there’s a free weekly fitness meet-up that includes a walk, run, and/or strength conditioning activity. Come November, check the free Four Corners Festival, which features gourmet food and wine tastings, culinary demonstrations, film, performing arts and more. Tucson’s historic, tree-lined Fourth Avenue also delivers a decidedly local and eclectic offering of shops, restaurants, bars and places to hear live music. visittucson.org
