La Cocina de Luz | Telluride

La Cocina de Luz began as a “hole in the wall” Mexican joint with four tables, but owner Lucas Price has expanded his empire, adding indoor and outdoor seating and offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. A self-proclaimed chile relleno aficionado, I found my needs completely satiated by two cheese-filled, batter-fried Anaheim chiles with red or green chile sauce (do both—make it Christmas in September!).

The crafted burritos and tacos come loaded with guacamole, lettuce, queso blanco and a choice of fillings: grilled skirt steak, roasted chicken, fried hake, garlic-roasted vegetables or (my pick to click) pork braised in achiote and citrus. Even the salad of mixed field greens impressed, with fresh sunflower sprouts and jicama complementing the carrots, red bell pepper and feta cheese. Your cashier is also your bartender, so mellow out if the people in front of you order margaritas. And they always do.
