Colorado Senior Open Has First Female Entrant

The big story at this week's HealthONE Colorado Senior Open isn't John Elway's participation in the event. It's Sherry Adonian Smith's.

Smith is the first female competitor in a Colorado Senior Open.

Smith, a teaching professional at Valley Country Club in Centennial, CO, earned an exemption through the Colorado Section PGA, of which she’s a member.  She was also eligible to play in the Colorado Open in July but has chosen not to compete, and she has a conflicting event keeping her from participating in the Colorado Women’s Open in August.

Kevin Laura, CEO of the Colorado Open Foundation, told The Denver Post he is “ecstatic” that Smith is playing in the state's senior open.

“We have always encouraged it,” Laura said. “Sherry qualified just like the men did. I think it's great.”

Smith’s tee times are Wednesday at 7:55 am and 12:50 pm on Thursday.
