221 South Oak | Telluride

Every townie espouses 221 South Oak, a charming Victorian house in downtown Telluride, as the perfect spot for Sunday brunch through the summer. I’d heard that chef Eliza Gavin makes some exciting sausages with locally sourced meats, and the buffalo paprika sausages wrapped in grape leaves lassoed my taste buds. The menu featured several varieties of benedicts, and a dining companion favored the smoked salmon benedict of poached eggs with spinach, dill and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin. But I found a couple of gems under the “Rib Stickers” category: a crawfish, corn and poblano ettouffe, served with poached eggs on corn bread and home fries; and a crispy hash brown of potato pieces, slices of flatiron steak and cheddar cheese infused with the kick of whiskey, topped with a fried egg. I managed to devour them both, figuring I should honor brunch and leakfast, respectively.
