2017 Nissan Titan Pro-4X

2017 Nissan Titan Pro-4X
The 2017 TITAN half-ton builds on the foundation of design innovation established by the original Titan full-size pickup, including bed and cab features that are now industry standard, and the rugged workhorse sensibility of the new TITAN XD.

I felt very relieved by how much I enjoyed the Titan Pro-4X. The older generation was a solid alternative to the domestic trucks for much of its long life, and its replacement is critical to Nissan’s domestic profits. Yet my first exposure, to the XD diesel version, was very off-putting. In contrast to that overwrought machine, the half-ton Pro-4X has almost restrained, beefy styling outside, and a substantially more cohesive interior. Most materials are decent, and it is a comfortable place to spend time—front or back—with many compelling luxury car features, like a heated, power tilt/telescope steering wheel, available as options.

That this version of the Titan rides so much better than its big brother certainly helps; both primary and secondary body motions are more controlled—partial credit goes to the Pro-4X’s Bilstein damping, probably—and the steering is linear and accurate; the Titan even goes around corners with some verve. Braking power is stout and pedal modulation excellent; independent testing shows it to out-stops most competitors, too. The 5.6-liter V8 engine is a great complement, with a very wide powerband, meaty exhaust note and superb integration with the 7-speed automatic, whose shifts are intuitive, precise and firm. 0-60 runs in the mid-6s mean its fast enough for fun and strong enough for towing duties, and the content of the Utility and Tow Package (including a central locking for the tailgate, parking sensors, a track and cleat tie-down system, LED bed lighting and 120V outlet and a fold-down step) makes the most of the 5.5ft bed.

While the domestics still excel in some areas and Toyota’s Tundra wins the resale value race, the Titan is fully competitive in many areas now, and superior in some. It shifts better than the GM trucks, has many more features than a comparable Toyota (and drives better) and rides better than the Ford. Whether any of this will be enough to sway a significant number of buyers remains to be seen, but those who choose the Pro-4X look like they’ll be very happy; I know I was.
